Why the road route wins by a wide margin here

There's no fast rail link across to Birmingham from Suffolk — the train route zig-zags via London, which is why it takes nearly twice as long as driving. For an early departure especially, that gap makes a road transfer the only realistic option that doesn't mean setting off the night before.
