Bury St Edmunds to Stansted Airport: distance, timings, and what to expect

Stansted is the closest major airport to Bury St Edmunds, and by far the most common route we drive. Here's what the journey actually looks like, whichever way you choose to travel.

How far is it?

By road, Stansted Airport is around 40 miles from Bury St Edmunds. Driving takes roughly 55 minutes to an hour, depending on the route and time of day — a little longer during the morning rush around Cambridge and the A11/M11.

Your options for getting there

There's no direct train or bus from Bury St Edmunds to Stansted, so public transport means at least one change:

• Train — around 1 hour 30–50 minutes via Cambridge, plus the walk or connection at each end.
• Coach/bus — available, but journey times of 2.5–3 hours are common once you include the connection.
• Driving yourself — quickest if you own a car, but then there's airport parking to book and pay for, on top of driving tired at the end of a long trip.
• Private hire transfer — around an hour, door to door, no parking to arrange, and no connections to time.

Why an early flight changes the maths

Stansted handles a lot of early-morning departures, which means a 4am or 5am start for check-in. At that hour there's no train, and taxi apps in a small town like Bury St Edmunds can mean a longer wait for a car than you'd expect, with pricing that moves depending on demand.
