Bury St Edmunds to Cambridge Stations: distance, timings, and what to expect

Cambridge now has three railway stations — the main Cambridge station, Cambridge North, and the newly opened Cambridge South — and we cover transfers to all of them.

How far is it?

By road, Cambridge is around 29 miles from Bury St Edmunds. Driving takes roughly 35 minutes via the A14, our shortest regular run. Cambridge North and Cambridge South are a few minutes either side of that, depending on which side of the city you're headed to.

Three stations, one straightforward transfer

• Cambridge (main station) — the city's principal station, close to the centre and the university colleges.
• Cambridge North — serving the north of the city and the Science Park, useful if that's your destination rather than the centre.
• Cambridge South — Cambridge's newest station, opened in June 2026, serving the Biomedical Campus, Addenbrooke's Hospital, and AstraZeneca's headquarters.

Whichever one you need, just let us know when booking — the drive time barely changes between them.

Your options for getting there

• Train — around 40 minutes on the direct Greater Anglia service to the main station.
• Driving yourself — around 35 minutes, plus station parking, which fills up quickly at peak times.
• Private hire transfer — around 35 minutes, door to door, no parking to find.

A short, frequent run

Being one of our closest regular destinations, this is a route we run often — for early trains, for connections onward to London or beyond, and increasingly for appointments at the Biomedical Campus now that Cambridge South is open.
