Bury St Edmunds to Heathrow Airport: distance, timings, and what to expect

Heathrow is the longest of the regular runs we do from Suffolk, and one of the most common for long-haul and business travel. Here's what the journey actually looks like.

How far is it?

By road, Heathrow is around 97 miles from Bury St Edmunds. Driving takes roughly 1 hour 40 minutes in normal traffic via the A14, M11 and M25, longer during peak periods around the M25.

Your options for getting there

There's no direct rail link, so public transport involves at least one change, usually via London:

• Train — around 3 hours, via Stratford or central London and onto the Elizabeth line or Heathrow Express.
• Coach/bus — typically 4.5–5 hours including connections.
• Driving yourself — around 1 hour 40 minutes, but then Heathrow's parking charges add up fast, especially over several days.
• Private hire transfer — around 1 hour 40 minutes, straight to your terminal, no parking to arrange.

Why this route benefits from a transfer more than most

Heathrow is far enough from Suffolk that public transport realistically isn't competitive on time — three hours plus connections versus under two hours by road is a big gap, especially with luggage. For business travellers and long-haul flights where a missed connection has real consequences, a fixed, tracked pickup removes a lot of the uncertainty.
