Luton is a common choice for budget and charter flights out of Suffolk. Here's how the journey actually breaks down, whichever way you choose to travel.

How far is it?

By road, Luton Airport is around 64 miles from Bury St Edmunds. Driving takes roughly 1 hour 15 minutes in normal traffic, a little longer if you're routing around Cambridge or Stevenage during busier periods.

Your options for getting there

There's no direct train or bus link, so public transport means at least one change, often two:

• Train — around 2 hours 30 minutes to 3 hours, changing via Cambridge and London.
• Coach/bus — can take 3.5–4 hours depending on the service and connections.
• Driving yourself — around 1 hour 15 minutes, but then there's Luton's airport parking to book and pay for.

Luton's public transport connection from Suffolk is genuinely awkward — there's no fast, direct route, and journey times by train or coach can run to three or four times the length of the drive. For an early flight, that gap matters even more: a 2 hour 30 minute train journey with a change or two isn't realistic before a 6am check-in.
